Submission 1- Equus

The house is to design for a rivetman whose job is to connect steel beams by using rivet. As he believe every thing in the word is form of simple sharps. which has the same idea as tetris. The first idea come up to my mind is the house has to be using simple form. As everything in the world are form of simple form and rivets are the connection of them. I choose Tetris and tangram to be the basic idea of the house. Both Tetris and tangram are a form of different simple sharps, however they can have many complex combinations.

Design 1:
This design is using Tetris as the basic idea. I’ve chosen different sharps of tetris as the form of the house.

Design 2:
This design is also using the Tetris idea, I have focus on the L sharp from of tetris. The design is a combination of different sizes of the L sharp.

Design 3:
This idea is base on Design 2, I try to round the sharp of the L form and added some more extra design on this idea. The form of this design has more curves and smoother than Design 1,2 and 4.

Design 4:
I got the idea for the tradition game, Tangram, which is a game that forming a lot of complex combinations by using a limited sharps. The internal design of this house is using the tangram idea, the photos are taken from above.

Rivetman: Sam Eastwood

This photo was taken with my parents when i was 1-year-old

My name is Sam Eastwood. My Dad was a British government officer and my mum was a German but she born in London. While I was 4, we move to Hong Kong because of my father’s job. Mum and Dad sent me to an international school, I can still remember the first day of school and I was so excited and nervous. After a few days I know most of the classmates and it was my happiest time in my life. During 1997, I was 16, Hong Kong had to be return to China and we have to move back to London. About half a year later, our family moved to Berlin.

I got into university when I was 18. I quit university on my second year of engineering. I heated the rigidity life so I became a rivetman. I love and proud of this job, I believe everything in the world was form of simple sharps and rivets are the connection of all these sharps. Although there was an amazing design but without building materials, these design only worth as some beautiful drawing on a piece of paper. Steel beams were a basic but important part of a building and my job is to rivet them. Every time when I finished one project, it feels like I had created something amazing by my hands. I also believe the more complex the more beautiful.

When I saw the news about the Sichuan earthquake, I decided to join the reconstruction project over China. The day I arrived Sichuan, I was shock by what I had seen at the scene of earthquake. It was much worst than I thought.

After this trip, my mind had charged a lot. I believed the more simple the more suitable. Beautiful appearance is only a bonus. For example, those victims of the earthquake had a lot of expensive clothes but those clothing could not keep them warm. In this case, no matter how pretty or how famous the brand is, they only worst a piece of useless cloth for the victims. So I believe functional should be come first in all commodities.
